Puerta del Puente

   Córdoba ha sido desde su origen una ciudad completamente amurallada. Para visitarla, ya fuese en el siglo I, en el X o en el XXI, había que atravesar alguna de las puertas que nos daban acceso a la gran urbe. De todas ellas, había una con un carácter especial, emblema e imagen de Córdoba: la Puerta del Puente.

   Llamada muchas veces de manera errónea el Arco del Triunfo por su carácter monumental, la Puerta del Puente es el acceso sur a la ciudad, en línea con el Puente Romano y, en su origen romano, con el cardo máximo (calle principal norte-sur). Sin embargo la imagen que hoy en día conserva se debe a una construcción mucho más tardía. Será en el siglo XVI, con el anuncio de la visita de Felipe II a Córdoba, cuando se tome la decisión de reconstruir la antigua puerta incluyendo una dedicatoria al monarca.

   Since its origin, Cordoba has been a walled city. From the first century to nowadays, going throughout the Middle Ages, you have to cross one of its gates to visit the large city. Among all of them, there was one with something special, which was Cordoba’s symbol and image: the Bridge Gate.

   Call many times by mistake “Arc of Triumph” (Is about its monumental size and appearance), the Bridge Gate is the southern entrance of the city, connecting with the Roman Bridge, which was connected too with the main north-south avenue in roman ages. Nevertheless, the image that we have today is the result of a later reconstruction. With the royal visit of Phillip the II in the XVI century, the city of Cordoba decided to roll up their sleeves and work in the rebuilding of the old gate, including homage and a welcome message to the king.
